Virg Bernero Announces Run for Governor in Grand Rapids

by: wizardkitten

virgbernero

OK kids, ya talked me into it. I went downtown to hear what candidate Virg Bernero had to say as he announced his run for governor here in Grand Rapids.

First of all, it's obvious that this is going to be an "outsider" race, as Bernero took aim at the "empty suits" in the Capitol, and pledged to stop the business as usual, partisan politics that caters to special interests and holds the state (and now the nation) in gridlock. He's not happy with state government as it stands, and he made that very clear. I'm not sure how he intends to make all that stop - but, that is the promise. Best of luck on that one.

State pride was a theme, and that was nice to hear. He wants to return Michigan to its "great state" status, and he hit on the usual; good paying jobs, education, etc. Putting Michigan back to work was, of course, a frequent topic.

The one thing that grabbed me was that he put a dollar figure on the amount of money that the Legislature has left laying on the ground due to the fact that they won't raise the revenue to meet federal matching funds. This is something I have blogged about before - the road money, Medicaid money - Bernero put the figure at $2.4 billion, and called it unacceptable that we are walking away from it. Cheers to that - it IS unacceptable, especially when you tie in the thousands of jobs that come from those federal dollars. When asked if he would raise gas taxes to get those federal road funds, Bernero indicated that he will be releasing his plan within the next few weeks, and we will hear the details then.

Bernero wouldn't name names when it came to some of his, shall we say, "colorful" descriptions of the current politicians or those running for the office Even when prodded by a reporter, he refused to get personal at this point, saying the he would let the people figure it out. He pointed to his record in Lansing as mayor, balanced budgets without any layoffs, and his desire to take that fight "across the street" and work for the people of the state.

He strikes me as very sincere - not the angry guy of FOX fame, but a guy that should bring some fire to the race, as he will speak his mind about what he believes. That's good.

Let the games begin.

Another thing that struck me (4.00 / 2)
I don't think the terms "Democrat" or "Republican" came up once. I may be wrong about that, but partisanship was definitely not an issue.

And notice he doesn't have "Democrat" on his signs either.

Interesting.

He's not the only one (4.00 / 1)
If you've seen Rick Snyder's ad, he doesn't mention that he's a Republican.

"Not unnoticed was that the ad never identified Snyder as a Republican. That could be a page from Scott Brown's playbook. While GOP faithful are eager to celebrate Brown's victory in the Massachusetts Senate race last month, his victory speech included the word "independent" several times. He did not say "Republican" once.

http://www.mlive.com/politics/...

It seems that politicians don't want to be associated with either party.

Once I got past the novelty of "nerd" (4.00 / 1)
I realized that Snyder blew his "I'm not a politician" message by taking those shots at other politicians in the beginning. It sends a mixed message.

"I'm not a politician", but I'll run a semi-attack ad, just like any other politician would. Goes right along with, "I'm not a politician", but I'll pay up at Mackinac to win a straw poll.

Guess what Rick - you're a politician!

I worked my a** off for a guy (4.00 / 2)
that didn't have Democrat on his sign.

That guy is Representative Scripps.

After reading this I am glad this is BFM. I hope we don't see the primary wars all over. But reading this I think I can actually feel the exasperation that you have with the current state of affairs in Lansing and maybe you are torn from accepting Virg as a candidate because of your allegiance to Gov. Granholm.

Or maybe I should have stayed away from the blogs. I figure I made it this long. lol

Thank you for supportingDan Scripps!

Glad you're back, Adam! (4.00 / 2)
I wondered what happened to you.  I thought about calling to see how you are, but one thing drives out another.  I haven't exactly been the most loyal blogger myself this year.

Hi Richard! (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the New Year greeting card! Also remember to email the info as to where to send a check for your reelection campaign. Lisa and I will always be more than happy to contribute.

Thank you for supportingDan Scripps!

I've been exasperated with Lansing for about three years (4.00 / 3)
But I lay the blame right where it belongs - at the feet of Mike Bishop.

I don't have a horse in this race, and I probably won't blog about it much (sounds like famous last words). But if candidates have public events, I will try to cover them and get a picture or two.

So, any primary wars will have to go on without me. I've got a budget to complain about (ha), and I'm still going to blog about Granholm, because that's why I came to community blogs in the first place. I don't run away from the pols I support.

Unless it's John Edwards. I do take that one back. ;-)

Not knocking at all (4.00 / 2)
Ah jeez. See you guys sucked me right back in! Been laying low and letting information sink in. I stopped having the ability to put my thoughts into coherent posts. Blogger block? Either way, as the adage goes "If you don't have anything nice to say..." Well I've had quite a few not nice things to say. But that is counterproductive.

Thank you for supportingDan Scripps!

Didn't think you were knocking (4.00 / 1)
I'm just explaining where I'm at with Virg and the rest. There are very few Dems I will go all out for, people forget that politics has not been a life-long thing for me. It was just an interest that through a series of events turned into what it is for me today. I'm no expert.

I'm tired of being angry. I spent eight years of Bush being angry. I've been angry with the legislature for the past three. (overlap anger!) I find myself getting angry at the blogs, at the media, at everyone.

I'm exhausted. I understand blogger block completely.

Me take picture. Click click. That's fun.

It is good to see you back - I hope you stick around and bring us updates on Scripps.

Good to hear this: (4.00 / 3)
"He strikes me as very sincere - not the angry guy of FOX fame, but a guy that should bring some fire to the race"

I love that he defended the auto companies on Fox but I was a little turned off by the angry matter in which he spoke.  Gov. Granholm spoke on numerous national shows in defense of the automakers too but she spoke in a calm, assertive manner which I think works better.

I like that Bernero is passionate about MI.  I have concerns on whether other Democratic candidates like Dillon or Ilitch (I'm not familiar with Bowman) can get people excited.  If he gets a good platform together and can raise the money, I think he could be a strong candidate.

I was there - where were you? (4.00 / 1)
I, too, attended Bernero's announcement in Grand Rapids.  I was wearing a jacket and tie with my name tag on.  I would have enjoyed finally meeting you.  Anyway, the mayor's speech definitely lived up to my expectations.  He was fiery, passionate, and definitely motivating.  He is exactly the kind of candidate for governor we need this year.  I have no problem with his "angry" defense of the hard-working men and women in the auto industry.  The voters are angry, and it is about time our elected leaders started reflecting some of that anger.  We need a few more passionate leaders and a few less defeatists/opportunists/apologists (pick one).

I was around (0.00 / 0)
Mostly back by the TV cameras, talking with Albin.

There were a lot of guys with jackets and ties - but have you noticed the politicians are going tie-less more and more?

The natural look. I like it.

I like the guy, but want to see his platform. (4.00 / 3)
I've liked the guy since his infamous Fox News bit.  When I saw him I knew that he'd have the guts to fight for his agenda if he was governor.

But I still want to know what that agenda is.  Rhetoric alone doesn't get the job done.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Me too (4.00 / 1)
If there were an easy way to create "jobs", they would have already done it. With the loss of manufacturing, I think we have entered an era where high unemployment is going to be a chronic problem - not just here, but nationwide. Virg talked a lot about putting people back to work - how does he intend to do that?

And as much as people want to run from partisan labels, we have a very partisan problem of one side saying "NO" to everything and refusing to compromise. The GOP has declared war on this state and this country, and the media refuses to acknowledge it.

That is the question I would love to see asked - "How do you stop obstruction and enact your agenda when one side will not compromise?" - but I don't think any of them have an answer for it.

Over at ML.... (4.00 / 3)
Yvette mentioned that part of Bernero's platform is putting a two-year moratorium on foreclosures, freezing tuitions rates, and making credit-card companies stop charging outrageous interest rates.

I can definitely get behind that.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Check this out (4.00 / 3)
MIRS Headline:

Virg Declares Class Warfare In Gov Announcement

"Sounding a strong class warfare message, Lansing Mayor Virg BERNERO today charged into the governor's race."

I don't get MIRS anymore, and apparently I don't need to. Talking about getting people decent paying jobs and a good life is suddenly "class warfare".

Ask me again why I hate Lansing punditry. Bernero must scare the pants off of them if they had to play the "class warfare" card already.

That just makes me like Virg more. (4.00 / 1)
When the RWNM is accusing the Dem of class warfare, it makes you like the Dem even more.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.
