Virg Bernero to Announce Candidacy For Governor On Monday

by: djtyg

Sat Feb 06, 2010 at 16:53:34 PM EST

From the email:

Dear Friend,

For the past weeks, I've been traveling across Michigan exploring a possible run for Governor.  I've thought it over.  And I've made a decision.  I'll be announcing my decision on Monday, February 8th.

After meeting people across Michigan, I can sense that people in this state are fed-up and frustrated, anxious and angry - and so am I.

The state I love is on the ropes.  People feel the walls closing in around them. Job loss, home foreclosure, rising health care costs, jacked up credit card rates and rising tuition are crushing too many Michigan families.  People are hurting.

The clueless leadership at the State Capitol doesn't get it.  The so-called leaders in the Washington bubble don't get it either.  And the Wall Street wizards who helped put us here definitely don't get it.

Michigan needs a Governor who will get up every day ready to fight for workers and families. We need a new vision and a different kind of leadership to get Michigan back on track.
We have the best workforce in America right here but we need leadership as strong as our backs and as innovative as our minds.

If you are one of my friends from across the country, please show your support by visiting my website www.votevirg.com and considering making a donation.

If you are one of my friends in Michigan, please join me on Monday, February 8th at one of the following locations:

· Detroit at 10 AM at Detroit Chassis, 6501 Lynch St, Detroit, MI 48234.
· Grand Rapids at 3 PM at LaGrave Avenue Fire Station, 38 LaGrave Ave SE, Grand
  Rapids, MI 49503.
· Lansing at 5:30 PM at the Lansing Center at 333 E Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48933.

Good to hear (4.00 / 2)
I wish the other people would officially declare their candidacy so we can start to decide who would be the best nominee.

As of now, Bernero seems to be the only hope to get a somewhat progressive candidate.  Ilitch's donations to Bush are a big concern.  Bowman is an out-of-state former Goldman Sachs investment banker which could be problem.  Dillon is a DINO and won't get my vote.

So I'm glad Bernero is running...not to say he'll automatically get my primary vote.  I want to hear what everyone has to say (except Dillon) before I make a decision.

I don't know what Bernero's platform is.... (4.00 / 4)
which is why I haven't thrown my support behind him yet.  But if he's as progressive as he claims to be, I'd back him in a second.  He has the fire that we need our candidate to have.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

I like his fire (4.00 / 3)
But he is using teabagger framing here. I've got Palin on the TV this morning saying basically the same things about our "leadership".

I didn't bust my ass for Granholm and Obama to turn around and throw them under the bus. I won't be a part of it. They have the "vision" - what they don't have is a party that will get a spine and backup the Democratic platform already in place.

(Some would say that in itself is weak leadership, but when you notice this has been a problem with the Democrats as a whole all the way back to Carter - I don't think so. It runs a lot deeper than just the leadership.)

Bernero wants to call out the Conservadems and fight Republican obstruction, that's cool. Let's hear it. But so far, these are just campaign words that play to the "angry" crowd - and those people are not going to support Democrats.

I agree about Dem candidates... (4.00 / 1)
bashing the Granholm administration.  I liked some of what Alma Wheeler Smith has proposed, such as publicly funding college educations for all students.  Her harsh criticism of Granholm has annoyed me and that's why I wouldn't even consider her now.

Bernero should be careful if he thinks criticizing Granhom will help him win.  My guess is people who dislike Granholm enough that they'll hold other candidates accountable for her actions probably won't vote for any Democratic candidate.  All it will do is piss off Granholm supporters like me.

Well... (4.00 / 1)
to be fair he didn't mention anyone by name.  And there's a lot of people (including us) who are mad at the gridlock in DC and Lansing, caused by the Repugs and DINOs.

When I read it I didn't think he was targeting Granholm and Obama, I felt like it was more geared toward Bishop, Dillon, and the US Senate.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

DJ for Governor!!! (4.00 / 2)

Virg has the passion & energy (4.00 / 1)
Virg has the energy, passion and true Demcoratic credentials to roll Dillon. The question is will Virg prove himself to just be the loud, angry demogouge he plays on Fox TV or will he become a thoughtful candidate that all Democrats can be comfortable supporting? If Virg thinks he can win the Democratic primary by attacking Granholm he has too be as inebriated as Dillon is most of the time. I hope Virg focuses on the future and his opponents.
