Protest Racism, Glenn Beck and the MI Chamber of Commerce

by: Kathy

Tue Sep 15, 2009 at 10:13:40 AM EDT

Today, the Michigan Chamber of Commerce is hosting keynote speaker Glenn Beck at their 2009 "Future Forum" even though 62 companies have withdrawn their ads from his show, and he's now lost over 50 percent of his ad dollars. Major corporations dropped Beck because his extremist views don't align with their values or corporate culture. Beck called our president a racist with a "deep-seated hatred of white people." (The president is working hard to provide health care to all Americans, regardless of color. What's so racist about that?)

I've been writing about Beck and the Chamber for several weeks now and it wasn't until today that the media reported on it. Kathy Barks Hoffman reported that the MSU College Democrats and other groups would be protesting at the East Lansing event tonight, and she quoted Progress Michigan as saying the visit "brings shame" to the state. Chamber President Rich Studley sees it differently.

Chamber President Rich Studley says his group has a tradition of inviting speakers from across the political and ideological spectrum.

State Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer spoke last year, and Democratic strategist James Carville has spoken in the past.

Studley says the dinner is all about "ideas and healthy debate."

I'm pretty sure Brewer and Carville have never called a president or Supreme Court Justice a racist, or prayed for a politician to burst into flames. Beck said all of those "healthy" things and then some.

The Chamber chose a keynote speaker known for his inflammatory, over-the-top, racist rhetoric to speak at a forum sponsored by businesses. Racism is unhealthy and businesses should be sending that message loud and clear, not promoting it by choosing a keynote speaker known for those sentiments.

Healthy is standing up to racism. Healthy is being strongly committed to diversity. This is what AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka said earlier this week at the AFL-CIO National Summit on Diversity in Pittsburgh:

The union movement is becoming more diverse and the new leadership of the AFL-CIO is committed to working harder to reach out to young workers, people of color, women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers...

And this is what voices across the union movement said:

...we as a union movement need to look out for justice and fairness for every worker-on the job, in the community and in the union structure itself.

That includes not just race and gender, but also national origin, ability, sexual orientation, age and gender identity. And it doesn't just mean talking with workers from various backgrounds-it means making sure that the leadership and the decision makers in unions reflect the members they represent.

By inviting Glenn Beck to speak to Michigan's business community, the Chamber leadership sends the message that they don't have a problem with racism. That's wrong, and it's not healthy for our state.

The MSU Dems are asking people to join them in protesting Beck's appearance night. You can RSVP on their Facebook page or contact Mitchell Rivard, President of the MSU College Democrats, at (989) 450-2534 or president@msudems.org. Please consider joining them.

UPDATE: Progress Michigan is asking people to sign their petition:

It's time to stand up and renounce the politics of hatred, lies, and paranoia. It is not a time to honor them. Glenn Beck is bad for our state. He is bad for our country. And we don't believe any public entity should be honoring him with a check for a hate speech. Click on the link to add your name to the petition and view footage of Glenn Beck at his worst.

I forgot to include the MSU Facebook link so I went back and added it in.

It will be interesting to see who attends this (4.00 / 1)
Michigan political leaders are invited, of course. You know that the Republicans will be there.

Agenda (4.00 / 3)
Alma Wheeler Smith and Dillon are listed on the agenda, as well as Bill Ballard, Mike Bishop, Pete Hoekstra, Marc Corriveau, and Mike Cox, among others.

Someone left a comment at ML that Smith signed on to the event before Beck was chosen as the keynote speaker and that she was considering whether to attend or not. I don't have a problem with Democrats honoring their commitment and following through, but I would hope they make a statement publicly condemning racism, Beck's rhetoric and the Chamber's decision to choose him as their keynote speaker. Except for Mark Brewer's statement, we've heard nothing from the Democrats.

Republicans (4.00 / 3)
Have been quiet too, not that I'd expect them to denounce racism or extremists like Beck.

[ Parent ]
Very true (4.00 / 2)
Business leaders have been silent about Beck's message too. Some of the Forum's corporate sponsors include Amway, DTE, MGM Grand and Meijer. They should be speaking out and condemning racism too.

These companies don't have a problem taking money from minority customers, but when it comes time to defending them and speaking out against racists like Beck, they're as quiet as church mice.

Michigan Dems are boycotting (4.00 / 3)
Kelly Rossman, who chairs the Chamber Foundation, said that Andy Dillon and Alma Wheeler Smith are boycotting this afternoon's session on account of Beck's appearance.

"When you smoke and drink, that tobacco doesn't mix with alcohol and you feel lousy the next morning, so I gave up cigarettes."--former Tiger manager Mayo Smith.

Good start (4.00 / 3)
It's good to see them taking a principled stand, now what about other Democrats, Republicans and businesses? Is racism, hate and extremism okay in their books?

Its One Thing (4.00 / 3)
to have a healthy debate of the issues, which I'm all for....it's another thing to debate the town idiot....or in this case, the Country's Idiot.

I've been sent this super secret picture taken from the top of Mike Bishop's ego that shows the crowd is much bigger than that...

You can tell it's real by the new monument to George Perles in the foreground.

Another tweet (4.00 / 3)
JohnFFreeman I pulled out of the MI Chamber's healthcare panel because of Glenn Beck's keynote. I refuse to legitimize him.

BTW, the Billionaires for Wealthcare followed Beck all the way from Washington to Lansing. This is a comment they left at PM:

"It is imperative we end the healthcare benefits for children now. Healthcare for those that can afford it! (children can't)"

Yea for the Billionaires! (n/t) (4.00 / 2)
Wish I could have gone - I would love to get some shots of them.

Comment From Mitchell, Pres MSUDems
It is absurd that the Michigan Chamber of Commerce - with the State of Michigan's econcomy - pay Glenn Beck, a radical right-wing propogandist, $25,000 to come and speak. His solutions are not right for Michigan or America!

Signs (4.00 / 1)
Scroll through the comments at PM and look for the links to various pictures. Some of the signs I've seen include "Let them eat Advil" and "Coal Barons 4 Glenn Beck".

John Freeman (4.00 / 2)
This is what he said about Beck to the MI Chamber yesterday:

A while back, I accepted an invitation to speak at today's Michigan Chamber of Commerce because I am interested in having a conversation with Chamber members about the pressing issues this state faces. I believe that common ground -- or at least honest, respectful disagreements -- can be reached if people are willing to talk & share ideas.

All too often, it seems that rational discussion is thrown to the wayside and fanaticism and hot air cuts through. Glenn Beck is a party to that. I don't want to be.

The Michigan Chamber often invites people with differing political opinions to speak at their conferences. But those invitees are usually people who conduct themselves with integrity.

Glenn Beck has no interest in being thoughtful and constructive. He is interested only in making over-the-top statements that appeal to people's worst instincts -- which makes it impossible to have honest discussions on tough issues like health care. His presence needlessly politicizes the event and further fractures people at a time when we need to work together and have a civil discourse.

Glenn Beck -- a man who has called President Obama a "racist," who has alleged that we are secretly being led down a road to fascism, and who has publicly stated "it took me like a year to start hating the 9/11 victims' families" -- is a fringe demagogue of the most dangerous type. It seems that whenever he speaks, he poisons the national conversation.

If, in the future, the Chamber is interested in hosting reasonable discussions about the issues, I look forward to participating in them. But to attend the event as has been planned is to implicitly endorse their keynote speaker. I could not do that in good conscience.

Well said, Mr. Freeman!

Good night, and good luck. (4.00 / 2)
I can't hang around any longer, but hopefully Bruce Fealk or someone else who was able to attend will give us all the details and/or pictures tomorrow.
