More Advertisers Drop Glenn Beck; The MI Chamber of Commerce Stands by Their Man

by: Kathy

Thu Sep 10, 2009 at 11:07:01 AM EDT

Six new advertisers have pledged not to run ads on Glenn Beck's show, bringing the total to 62.

ColorOfChange.org today confirmed that six new companies whose ads aired recently during Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck program have pledged to not to run ads on the show going forward. The additions -- Aegon, Ashley Furniture, Humana, Luxottica Retail (retail parent of LensCrafters and Pearle Vision), United States Postal Service and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare -- bring the number of companies boycotting Glenn Beck to 62. ColorofChange.org launched its campaign against Beck last month after the Fox News Channel host called President Obama a "racist" who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

Advertisers may be withdrawing their support, but Glenn Beck's racist rants and fear-mongering haven't dissuaded the Michigan Chamber of Commerce from hosting him as their keynote speaker at the Chamber's annual "Future Forum," scheduled for Tuesday, September 15 at Michigan State University's Kellogg Center.

We've heard quite a bit from the MCoC in recent days -  they've argued against Michigan tax increases and given their ideas on budget reform - but not a single word about Glenn's racist comments. Kraft Foods spoke out, and so did General Mills and Mercedes-Benz. His extremist views don't align with their values or corporate culture.

Beck's racist views shouldn't align with the MCoC's either. African-Americans comprise 14.2 percent of our state's population, and minorities represent nearly 20 percent overall. They deserve a business community that has their best interests in mind too, not just those of white people.

Michigan deserves a Chamber that doesn't alienate minorities either. We're trying to attract new businesses and jobs to the state, not chase them away, but that's essentially the message being sent across the country. Thinking of relocating to Michigan? Minorities not welcome.

I know I shouldn't be surprised (4.00 / 3)
but I always bury my head in my hands in disbelief when I hear the Michigan Chamber of Commerce is having Beck as a keynote speaker. I mean...Glenn Beck?? Why not go full monte and go with Dick Cheney?

LOL! (4.00 / 3)
Although Cheney might fit in better with the Ted Nugent/NRA crowd.

Another good fit is Karl Rove. He started banging the racist drum early in Obama's presidential campaign. Did you catch what he said on Fox Business News after Joe Wilson shouted "Liar" at the President last night? He said, Joe Wilson, good guy.

Another shrill, disrespectful Republican.

Wingnut welfare keeping Beck on the air? (4.00 / 1)
Sara Robinson at CAP asks: Is Glenn Beck's Show on Right-Wing Life Support?

She checked out the short list of companies/organizations still advertising on Beck's show and came to the conclusion that there's emerging evidence to suggest that, as the legitimate advertisers disappear, Glenn Beck's TV show may be relying more and more on financial life support from rich right-wingers...like Rupert Murdoch, who owns Fox.

Even more interesting is the appearance of the Foundation for a Better Life and the Independent Women's Forum. According to Sourcewatch, the Foundation for A Better Life is a 501(c)3 funded by far-right-wing oil and media baron Philip Anschutz. The Independent Women's Forum is a conservative anti-feminist group that opposes affirmative action, gender equity programs like Title IX, and the Violence Against Women Act; and which has close ties to Americans for Prosperity. Both are non-profit 501(c)3 corporations. In addition, last week's roster included the Our Country Deserves Better PAC, which is one of the leading organizations backing the teabagger movement. ...

It's not clear how long these specific groups have been advertising on Beck's show, or how much of the show's current airtime they're collectively covering. But if ads from other Murdoch enterprises, conservative 501(c)3s, and PACs continue to grow as a share of the total, it will be clear a sign that Beck has fallen from his perch as the crown prince of FOX, and is well on is way to becoming a charity case who can only stay on the air as long as the big infusions of wingnut welfare continue.

Don't despair for Fox though. They won't be short a wingnut if they lose Beck - John Stossel is leaving ABC and moving to the network.

Six new advertisers have pledged not to run ads on Glenn Beck's show, bringing the total to 62.

I thought one of the defining beliefs of right-wing ideology was that the market is always* right...

(* Yes, even right-wingers admit some instances of market failure. Go away, you're interrupting my snark.)

Have You Heard (4.00 / 2)
of any protests being planned at MSU on the 15th?  I'd like to email my daughter, who lives across the street from the Kellogg Center.

Not yet, (4.00 / 1)
But if your daughter knows of any, please let us know, okay? Thanks.

Why can't we plan a protest? (4.00 / 1)
Let's just do it.

Best way to protest (4.00 / 2)
would be to get businesses to withdraw their memberships from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Beck will love seeing people protesting his appearance. The man craves attention and is not discerning enough to care what kink of attention it is.

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.

Agree (4.00 / 1)
Tina left a comment recently about her husband's letter to the Chamber. He withdrew his financial support from them because of Beck. This was the line that struck me the most:

Glenn Beck does not represent my ideals and views and is way off from mainstream America.

The Chamber should be working to improve the business environment in our state while setting standards of decency. Choosing Beck as their keynote speaker is a slap in the face to all of us who care about making our state and country better.

If you own a business and you're reading this, please consider dropping your membership. Michigan's citizens deserve better than Beck and a Chamber that supports him.

And, if you're reading this and know of someone who owns a business, ask them if they financially support the MI Chamber. If they do, ask them to withdraw that support.

(I tried to find a list of Chamber members on their website, but it's not listed.)

Don't feed Beck's big ego (4.00 / 2)
But protesting an increasingly right-wing chamber of commerce is appropriate. Maybe the media would cover it then.
