| Sometimes you need a reminder of why you fight. Especially when it seems that the Democrats elected to office haven't been doing the best job of representing their party or their constituents. The debate on healthcare being a big example.
But then Republicans go and do something stupid and you have a good reminder:
The senate has voted to cut the Michigan Promise Scholarship, but it's not a done-deal yet. They also voted to ban taxpayer dollars from funding the new state police headquarters, but the House did not vote on that last night -- so that is still up in the air.
Now the State Police Headquarters hasn't received a lot of love, but cutting the Michigan Promise Scholarship? Are you nucking futs? It seems like any idea that's been presented by Granholm to bring jobs to this state are being cut simply for shits and giggles.
I really do believe that the Republicans don't want the economy to rebound in this state. If you look at the message boards on the Freep and other news sites, everytime we get a new factory producing alternative energy, or notice that the Lake Orion GM Plant is going to stay open to produce a new vehicle, you see the right-wingers acting as though the creation of new jobs is somehow a bad thing.
The truth is that the Repugs have been stonewalling all attempts to create jobs in this state for years. Wizardkitten had documented the stubborness on the part of the Senate Repugs to create a Renewable Portfolio Standard despite the fact that numerous studies had shown that it would have a positive economic impact. They refused to cut the budget to their own offices to keep 100 State Police Troopers employed. And now they're working to keep kids from going to college so that they can prepare themselves for the 21st century economy.
All this is being done simply so they can have a fighting chance in 2010.
The Repugs can be damn sure that we're not giving them that chance. |
