Sunday Open Thread: Spearco's Traveling Right Wing Political Indoctrination Show

by: Christine

Sun Jun 28, 2009 at 11:22:31 AM EDT

Can I tell you guys a secret?  I'm kind of into the survivalist stuff.  I'm not hardcore by any means, but I do believe in having emergency supplies in the car, and being prepared for power outages during a blizzard.  I also have been trying to be more frugal, due to certain harsh economic realities.  (BTW check out my little lettuces .. aren't they cool?

)

But I'm not expecting a complete collapse of society or a horde of zombies at my door.  Though zombies could be fun under certain conditions.

Anywaaay ... I look for survivalist and homesteading info on the web, and find that most of the time it leads me to conspiracy theorists or white supremacists.  It's a very sad state of affairs.  One of the potentially best sources of information for my interests is Jack Spearco's Survival Podcast.  Jack taught me things like how to start bowhunting, and how to keep warm if all I have is a shovel and a tarp.  The shovel and tarp thing should come in handy if I get lost while bowhunting.

Jack's shows used to be pretty good, but he is increasingly political.  I'm sure part of it is because he is a right-winger at heart, and most right-wingers spend their time these days bitching about Obama for make-believe reasons.  In the latest show, he's right in the middle of talking about how to start a garden, when he exclaims, "Obama can kiss my ass, I'm driving my truck."  Like Obama actually cares if you drive a truck.  I hear the tooth fairy also sucks.

I think another part is just that he's trying to turn Survival Podcast into a full-time living, and he needs to be more political & more extreme in order to secure his relevancy with the folks who have money.  It's sad.  He's diluted the good info that he has (What are some methods of combating mosquitoes?) with crap like Is a fair tax coming to America, is it too good to be true?

Spearco is also driving a wedge between his listeners and the rest of the world.  For one thing, he is encouraging isolationist survivalism ... find a bug out location and have a plan to get there when TSHTF.  Don't stay and help your neighborhood.  For another, he refers to his listeners as a brigade, and all others as sheeple.  It's us vs them.  THEY will try to stop you from burning carbon.  THEY will hurt you.  Probably by taxing you, stealing your food, and giving you some kind of flu.  Also they will use all the gas.  One way or another, your fellow man will kill you.  And tax you.

Really if I wanted right-wing political crap, I'd tune in to Hannity.  If I wanted goofball conspiracy crap, I'd tune in to Alex Jones.

This is really frustrating to me, in a Dave Ramsey kind of way.  I want the good stuff, and there's lots of it in there.  I would buy my way into the Brigade if not for the fact that I would then have to look down on all of you sheeple.  Good grief, it's hard enough to be humble as it is.

Besides, I refuse to financially support the latest incarnation of "always vote Republican or you will DIE DIE DIE!!!!"

Bah.

Try searching on keywords along the lines of permaculture, primitivism, and rewilding. The material may be sparse sometimes, but the politics will probably tend to be much more to your liking than what you're currently finding.

Spelled his name wrong (4.00 / 1)
It's Jack Spirko, not Jack Spearco.

My bad.  Bad bad bad.  =(

Response to this stunningly uninformed post... (2.00 / 4)
I just heard about this post and read it this morning.  I must say that you are remarkably uninformed about any of the content delivered on The Survival Podcast, to the point where I doubt very seriously if ever even listened to a single podcast of his.  For starters, to call him "right-wing" is absolutely ludicrous.  Given that you've never listened to his podcast I can't even offer any rational comment to this, since you have no frame of reference.  Second, I've probably listened to each of his shows for the last eight (8) months, and have never heard him say anything as inane as "always vote Republican".  Again, for you to suggest this just displays your stunning lack of knowledge of anything that is discussed on The Survival Podcast.  And finally, if you had one whit of experience on what is discussed on the Survival Podcast, you would know full well that Jack a) dismisses the Ruby Ridge and Waco types as complete nutballs, b) suggests that extremist war-game survivalists not even bother listening to his show, and c) speaks on issues ranging from gardening, food storage, and preparing for trouble (not war) in your life, whether small or large (ranging from family deaths, flooding, etc).

Given your stunning ignorance on the topic at hand, your blog post would be the same as me posting a blog entry, having never read a single thing about you, saying that you're a pedophile axe-murdering anti-Christian baby-seal-clubbing hermophrodite.  Obviously, being well-balanced, I'd never post such a thing, but you obviously don't have the same bullsh!t filter that most of us do.

Do yourself and your readers a favor: learn what you're talking about.

In response to The Survival Podcast and Jack Spirco (2.00 / 4)
Hey Christine.  Just read your blog.  I beg to differ on Jack Spirco's political affiliation.  I've been listening to Jack's Podcast now for about 100 episodes and routinely refer back to older ones for information.  His political commentary, should be perceived as just that.  While you are entitled to your opinion, I see Jack as a middle of the road person when it comes to his politics.  He neither agrees with what the Democrats or the Republicans have to say all the time, nor does he disagree.  It is clear he is an Independent or Libertarian.  His research and commentary seem to be just that to me.  I do not think Jack is right wing at all... He definitely has swings both to the right and to the left but walks that middle road...

To that end, I am novice at best with regards to being a survivalist, however the "wedge" you proclaim he is putting in between his listeners and the rest of the world is completely incorrect as well.  I live in the suburbs of NYC.  A fear, or a matter of reality in NYC is that it is one of the first targets in the United States for most major weapon strikes; whether they be biological, chemical, or nuclear.  A fear of my own is a dirty bomb attack in Mid Town Manhattan in the Times Square area where I frequent and used to work.  I always had a bottle of Potassium Iodide in my desk, as well as a "get home bag" in the event I had to hoof it over the bridges, through the tunnels, or across a river (which admittedly I was not properly prepared for).  However, I digress.  My point is that living in the suburb of a major metro area like NYC has alerted me that I WILL need to rendezvous with my family and friends in a location that may have to be remote enough from NYC to protect myself from the following: A. Radiation Poisoning, B. Fall out (If I am still alive), C. Chemical or Biological disaster, D. Flood (because remember NYC is basically at or below sea level), or other natural disaster.  A "Bug Out Location" is not only important, but a requirement for me.  I happen to have two potential locations at my disposal in the event of an emergency or disaster.  One with family, and one without where I can hold up a few days myself should I need to.

To that end, I have learned much from Jack about being more self reliant, permaculture, agriculture, have increased my water/food storage (hard to do when living in an apartment), and have been made more politically aware, etc.  I have followed up many Podcasts with my own research, just to be sure Jack is not blowing smoke up everyone's hole.

The Brigade, well, guess what, did you go to college, ever join the scouts, a fraternity, 4H, etc.  I hear that the scouts are routinely called boy scouts and girl scouts.  That 4H'ers are referred to as 4H'ers.  I guess there might be a conspiracy there too... Let it go.  I support Jack's Podcast, donated my 50 dollars because I do get value out of what he has to say.

Does Jack sometimes rant a little much in the car, sure he does (sorry Jack), but I do as well when I get on my soap box.  You cannot expect a man who is passionate about putting his information out there to not get excited about it and react passionately.

Let's talk taxes for a moment... You mentioned them above, I hope you have been watching the news, because now the White House is saying that new Taxes for the middle income individuals (you and I, Christine) are pretty much inevitable since our President insists on using you and I as an ATM card.  Not my idea of representing and working for the people, voted in by the people.

We all have our opinions, and here is mine... I listen intently to Jack's Podcast, and take in what I can, and dispose quickly of what does not make sense for me.  I look at his Podcast objectively for the information I need, and take everything else with a grain of salt.  This is just my side of the story.

Finally, I think you were a little harsh above.  If Jack is trying to make this full time, that is his right, and I believe he is trying to have ALL bases covered for all his listeners, whether they be right wing, left wing, or in the middle....

Oh, and nice lettuce.

In addition... (2.00 / 4)
Why would you bash someone you have learned from?  There is something odd about that.

[ Parent ]
Inaccurate at best (2.00 / 4)
I hardly know where to start! Perhaps here:

You have so completely mis-heard the message it is staggering; Jack's whole thrust is the complete inverse of the quote above. It's almost as if your audio player only caught every third word or something.

Besides, I refuse to financially support the latest incarnation of "always vote Republican or you will DIE DIE DIE!!!!"

This such a complete fabrication, It makes my wonder if you have evr actually listened to a complete episode of the show.

The Survival Podcast is not everyone's cup of tea, but please listen to two or three episodes for yourself. If you disagree with Jack, then at least you can do so on the basis of factual information, not a second-hand distortion.

Btw, Christine, Jack has invited you to discuss your viewpoints on the podcast. If you are indeed a listener, you know how to get in touch with him.

reply: Sunday Open Thread (2.00 / 4)
wow, how uninformed can one person be? Did you even listen to a complete show? You win the ass clown of the day award so congratulations!! You may want to go back and LISTEN to some of the episodes from beginning to end and THEN form an opinion. And just as a side note, His name is Spirko not Spearco. I'd add more to this reply but I don't think you could comprehend it.

rofl (4.00 / 1)
Thanks preppers for coming to Jack's defense.  I do know how to get in touch.

Either you are being deliberately misleading... (2.00 / 4)
...Or you have not been listening. Jack doesn't toe the right wing line, he trashes them as much as he does the Democrats.

He's a libertarian, by his own assessment and by that of anyone who listens to the opinions he expresses.

I don't know where you get the "isolationist" message from, either.

Don't misrepresent people so obviously.

are you kidding? (1.33 / 3)
Judging from how far off you are on The Survival Podcast I am going to guess that you have never actually heard it before.  If you had you would know that you are an assclown.  I seriously hope he sues you for slander.  You make me sick with your lies.

FYI to BFM readers, (4.00 / 2)
Jack told his listeners to stop by and call me a liar.

I guess! (3.00 / 3)
This post was over a month ago!  We had forgotten about it!

Get a life, people!

Seriously, this is just reopening a wound.  Whats-his-name should've just let it go.  It's not like he's losing listeners over this.  Who on BFM even heard of this guy before Christine mentioned him?

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

[ Parent ]
Who even heard of this guy? (2.50 / 4)
Exactly, and that's probably the motivation behind sending his readers/listeners over here. The man owns a media company and advertises himself as a speaker, author and consultant. He's trying to jump on the Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Beck, et al gravy train and make some money.

[ Parent ]
Well, you know what to do.... (2.50 / 4)
Set the comment ratings on "troll" and commence firing!

Your right! (2.00 / 4)
You are a liar.

maybe you should check your facts next time (1.33 / 3)
LIAR!

Jack says (4.00 / 1)
..he can't register on the site, because of our captcha system.  Not sure why.

Here's what he says about me -

She also said I told my listeners to go call here a liar, I can't register on that site it just won't let me. If someone could answer that for me with, "Yes Jack acknowledges that he did indeed ask his listeners to call you a liar.  He has stated he did so because you are indeed a liar and lied about him.  He wanted to post that himself here but said your crappy blog won't let him register"

Grin

Yes I am being a dick here!  But it is because of the out and out lies, if you want to insult me fine, if you lie about me you call down the fire.

Here is his forum thread where he calls me names and says I'm a liar - http://thesurvivalpodcast.com/...

And here is his blog post where he makes it clear that I am a liar - http://www.thesurvivalpodcast....

I'm not asking you to go there, so much as giving Jack the opportunity to answer.  Apparently he's teaching me a lesson for lying.

I'm not sure why Jack is all emo over this.  Just my opinion of his podcast, which I have pointed out has some good stuff.

But, whatever.

The language of censorship (2.00 / 2)
I posted a rather purposefully politically correct, and lengthy reply on "Blogging for Michigan" this afternoon... It is no longer here.  You took it down.  Typical BS Marxist rhetoric.  You can bash, but refuse to defend with real fact and rebuttal.  I guess you do not subscribe to the first amendment.  Disgusting.  You should continue to move north to an already established government that is closer to 100% than a country established on the ideal that the republic should have minimal government intervention.  Or have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution?

[ Parent ]
Your comment wasn't removed. (4.00 / 2)
It was hidden because other readers (like myself) downrated your comment.  A zero is a troll rating.  If you get two zeros on your comment, it becomes hidden from view to anyone that isn't a trusted user.  This is a privately owned website, and so don't go crying about the first amendment when your comment gets hidden.  The bill of rights applies to the government, not a privately owned blog.

So if you want to come onto a post that's over a month old that everyone had already forgotten about with the purpose of being disruptive pricks, your comment will get troll rated.

A voice in my head tells me not to be so mean to the conservatives.  I work very hard to ignore that voice.

Openminded (4.00 / 2)
Look, I am open minded, and I tried to be as politically correct as I could... It "seemed" and "seems" as though the comments are censored.  This just happens to be one of the only blogs I have ever seen that enabled on.  Therefore you can see the concern (for lack of a better word at the moment).  Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however, I have never heard Jack say many of the things stated in your original post.

To that end, I am an Independent, and switched recently because the Republicans are no longer Republicans and Democrats are no longer Democrats.  I spout the 1st Amendment, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence because not only the people, but those in office who swore to work for the people and uphold those documents do not serve the people nor do they serve the documents any longer.  Further, I am not just talking about this administration, but the previous administration, and administrations before them.  They serve special interest, and special interest only, because special interest is driving politics and business today.  The truth is we are the laughing stock of the world today because of our politics, our business practices, our religions, our stupid decisions to no longer lead but to be complacent.  How is that possible, to be a once great nation of producers to become a nation of sheep dependent upon government subsidy for survival?  Countries used to buy from us, now we buy from them, borrow money from them, and send all the money we make back to them... Therefore no more prosperity on our own countries soil.  Yet we argue over beliefs and opinions.  Don't you agree there is middle ground even for opinion and more important things to worry about than political party.  Political party is an experiment.  Democracy is an experiment, and from what I see in the media, the 'people' like the experiment.  I like the experiment.

Okay, off my soapbox...

[ Parent ]
We don't have to troll rate (4.00 / 2)
They want to post a rebuttal, so just let them be.  Though the one word "Liar" posts really don't add any value to anything.

It's ok.  I offended them.

Agree (2.50 / 4)
I used to go out of my way to be tolerant of other people's remarks, but the teabaggers and unruly mobs in this country have put me over the edge. There's no sense in being considerate to people who think bullying is an art form. It only validates their behavior.
