Mark Brewer’s challenge to remain as MDP Chair just got tough

About an hour ago I received an email blast from the Michigan Congressional Delegation as well as Senators Levin & Stabenow. In short, they are united to support Lon Johnson for MDP Chair.

Here’s the relevant text:

” … we are excited to support Lon Johnson to be our next State Party Chair. He is a strong leader who represents the future of our Party in Michigan.

We believe Lon is the right leader and will bring to the Party vision, energy and a commitment to collaboration.

As a Democratic family, we have worked hard together on so many issues important to our state. We respect the hard work and long service of our current State Chair, the MDP staff, volunteers, and organizations throughout the state. This is about uniting for the future of our Party. We invite you to join us.

  1. Wow, this is huge. First the UAW and Teamsters, now the congressional delegation. I think we might be headed for a floor fight!

I’m somewhat conflicted – Brewer sure is an asset to the MDP, but when all is said and done, results matter. We need to elect Democrats and defeat Republicans.

There is no question that the MDP needs a change in direction. Is a change in leadership also necessary? I’m not quite in one camp or the other (yet). But even if the change in leadership does not happen, the change in direction must happen.

    • I am also conflicted. I know I’ve had issues with some of Mark’s decisions, but I also have come to appreciate his experience and knowledge, as well as his work ethic. As you say though, we need the change in direction. And even if Mark could give us a change in direction, he’s alienated so many people that the effect of that change is weakened before it even gets going. It will be interesting.

It should be pointed out that Lon Barton is married to Julianna Smoot, finance director for Obama ’08 and Deputy Campaign Manager for Obama ’12, and he secured the endorsement of the UAW and the entire Democratic segment of the Michigan Congressional delegation before he even announced his candidacy. This isn’t some run-of-the-mill Democrat who’s had enough of Mark Brewer; this is a well-orchestrated (and presumably well-funded) edict from On High that Mark Brewer is done as MDP chair. Given the shellacking we received in 2010 and the fact that it actually got so bad at the state level that Michigan, home of the UAW, is now a right-to-work state and that it happened on Brewer’s watch, it’s not surprising that Levin, Stabenow, Dingell, et al, signed on.
