Jennifer Granholm on an active and strategic government

“While I would love to take full credit for Michigan’s turnaround, I can’t. And my successor, Governor Snyder, would probably like to take full credit too, but he can’t either since the new tax policies he enacted just took effect a few weeks ago.

But you know who can take much of the credit? President Obama and to a lesser extent, even President Bush. The rebound of Michigan began in late 2009, early 2010 after the restructuring of the auto industry.”

“What saved Michigan was the decision that the auto industry was too important to the nation to be allowed to fail.”

Maybe I’m just paranoid, but is it conceivable that some businesses might choose to “reward” jurisdictions for going Republican thru site selection, sourcing, allocation of investment capital, etc?

Some will, no doubt. That story and that particular article is flying around carried by a swarm of busy bees on right. Will become capstone justification case for them, no doubt.

The fight now in the Midwest (WI, OH, IN and MI) is key for the RTW folks. So far we have had the “Prisoner’s Dilemma” chiefly with Southern States.

Examples: 1) if one state offers tax credits, competing States are forced to offer them too; 2) if one State goes RTWFL, all must follow in terms of perceived ‘competition’ with lower wages.

But if they crack one, like in IN, the rest fall.

This is at the core of Snyder’s Top 10/Ranking strategy & justification and the ALEC “Rich States, Poor States” being used to promote RTWFL.

Important conceptual framework to think about. How do you stave off the “me too” impulse some have in perhaps not agreeing with RTWFL, but willing to accept it as necessary/inevitable. As in this case, of having to compete with IN over that CAT plant (VERY high econ impact BTW).

There are tactics to defeat this “Prisoners Dilemma” however. Detroit 3 know this well… now. Don’t focus on competition and market share, focus on best care you can make, period.

We have to create the best State we can with folks with money to spend (i.e. Higher Ed earning power), THEN business and jobs will come.

Hey, if you going to beat the Nerd, you have to be able to think like one.

Here is a thought. Hmmmm… Perhaps, the people of Michigan should get a little credit. Just a tiny bit? Nah! Let’s listen to the woman who brought us nothing but grief.

Obama deserves very little credit. And No… the only credit George Bush and Jennifer Granholm deserve is bringing Michigan to its knees. Bush has got to be one of the worst presidents ever. And Granholm was one of the worst governors, period.
