Happy Wednesday! Hail to the Victors. Ann Arbor makes the "most well-read cities" list: Ann Arbor has a lot of bookworms, according to a new list by Amazon.com. The online company on Tuesday released its annual list of 20 of the "Most Well-Read Cities in America," and Ann Arbor has… »

Effort to recall Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder faces opposition – FROM THE LEFTEffort to recall Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder faces opposition – FROM THE LEFT

With friends like these... The group working to recall Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, Michigan Rising missed a campaign finance report deadline by a few days this month. Though this isn't entirely uncommon given the unnecessarily complex and cumbersome reporting methods they use, it was still a… »

Tuesdays are just plain sexy, aren't they? Let's start with some Great Lakes. First, here's the Hoekstra trying to trade our lakes for some oil: From the MDP release: “Even most Republicans have supported the ban on drilling in the Lakes because they recognize that a disaster… »

Tell Hoekstra and Romney NO on November 6Tell Hoekstra and Romney NO on November 6

As you know, the 2012 elections are less than six months from now and the stakes are higher than ever. Whoever wins this election will determine whether our nation will continue to move to a new tune or rewind the same old song. We want leaders who can relate to and implement measures that will… »

As many of you know, Kyle Olson has operated out of Michigan for 8 years now, working for secret funders to demonize public school unions. For years he focused on the MEA, but he has since gone national, parading as a school reformer in order to play the press and blame school employees for every… »

Yes! I love Mondays! Let's brief! Julie Mack has an interesting observation on marriage equality: The fact is, it's hard to fashion a convincing case that gay marriage undermines American values or hurts society. If you accept the idea that homosexuality is a biological trait… »

Snyder to consider deregulation of 18 industriesSnyder to consider deregulation of 18 industries

I've chatted a little about the proposal to eliminate state licensing for certain professions. See here, here, and kinda here. Here's a little closer look at the subject. Let's start with how it started. The Michigan Office of Regulatory Reinvention (ORR) put together an advisory board of 14… »

Monday morning briefing and open thread

Lots of cool things happening :)

  • In progressive talk news, don’t forget to tune in, stream, or podcast Tony at www.thetonyshow.org. Today’s guests are Rep. Harvey Santana, Occupy Detroit, the one and only Mark Brewer, and our own Chris Savage. You can give Tony a call when he’s on air or chat with him on Twitter @tonytrupiano or on his Facebook page.
  • Stephanie Miller has Eric Boehlert and Rude Pundit on today. The entire show lineup is here.
  • Thom Hartmann’s radio show lineup is here. You can also get info on streaming his tv show at his site.
  • You can listen to Ed Schultz by streaming his show from his site here. It doesn’t look like his Monday lineup is online yet. Also, you can watch past episodes of his evening MSNBC show here.
  • Last but never ever least, The War Room with Jennifer Granholm is on Current at 9pm. The website is here. This is a really great show, check it out if you haven’t yet.

On to some reading,

  • Everytime I think the Republican Party has hit the rock bottom of decency, they pull out their shovels and dig a little more. This time they have dug deep enough to hit China, as you see in Eclectablog’s post here. Oh my goodness.
  • JGillian at Right Michigan is questioning whether Randy Richardville is illegally occupying his office. Interesting article with some supporting evidence.
  • Governor Snyder has asked the press for a partnership.

He told members of the Michigan press that he wants to use both social media outlets as well as the press to combat misleading information from political ads or biased news sources.

“Too often people today select media channels that tell them what they want to hear,” Snyder said to a room-full of students, reporters, editors and publishers during the legislative luncheon.

Therefore, Snyder wants to fill the press with what he wants people to hear. (Anyone out there still think he’s not your typical Republican?)

My favorite part was this, “”It’s not just about the programs you create, but how you treat your citizens.”"

[Insert a giant WTF from Michigan's LGBT folk here]

  • Looks like Virg Bernero continued spending from his gubernatorial campaign account in 2011. Oy.

From the Census Daily Feature:

Monday, February 6th. It may seem hard to believe, but it was 48 years ago this month that G.I. Joe action figures first went on sale. G.I. Joe was the first mass market doll intended for boys, and at $2.49, it was a huge success. The figure’s name came from the movie, “The Story of G.I. Joe,” starring Robert Mitchum and Burgess Meredith. For several decades, families all over America found parts to G.I. Joes hidden under couch cushions, behind refrigerators, and stuck in vacuum cleaner hoses. Today, in a market dominated by imports, making dolls and stuffed animals is a $167 million a year business in the U.S., employing just under 1,000 people. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.

Here’s to a great progressive Monday!!

I don't just blog policy. I MOCK IT.
