Special Veterans Event + The People’s News 6/27

Happy Monday, Michigan! It's a beautiful day, but unfortunately we can't say the same thing for what's brewing inside of our State Capitol.

While politicians continue pass legislation hurting our working men and women, including our veterans, tomorrow we'll be honoring Michigan's veterans in a special event with Army veteran and Congressman John Dingell at UAW 723 (281 Detroit Ave, Monroe) at 5:30pm and we hope you'll join us as we fight the attacks. You can learn more about this event and others in your area by texting MI to 225568.

In the meantime, here are today’s top news stories…

APHouse Dems to call on GOP to restore K-12 funds

House Democrats are calling on Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and GOP lawmakers to restore money cut from public schools… They also want to keep the school aid fund from being used for anything besides public schools. The new budget allocates some of the school aid fund to universities and community colleges.

FREE PRESS COLUMNRochelle Riley: Snyder’s gamble is a big risk

Snyder’s rationale for helping businesses was simple: They create jobs. Problem is, there’s nothing in the legislation that actually requires companies to hire or retain people in Michigan or otherwise change anything they’re doing. That means Snyder gave our tax dollars to businesses based on a pinkie swear.

MLIVE COLUMNIn Michigan, the middle class is in danger

There is a well-founded worry in this country for the future of the middle class, which grew rapidly after World War II but has struggled over the past several decades. In Michigan, the middle class is under siege as hundreds of thousands of low-skill, high-wage manufacturing jobs have disappeared. What will it take to rebuild it?

LSJUniversities stay below 7 percent tuition cap — barely

College students this fall will pay more than twice as much in tuition at the state’s 15 public universities as students paid 10 years ago, taking about $5,000 more out of their pockets. Weary parents coping with the financial challenges of falling home prices, stagnant wages and layoffs are wondering when the increases will stop.

We're a diverse coalition of students, seniors, workers, families and organizations fighting to protect Michigan’s middle class.
